Local Custom T-Shirt Company Sees Exponential Growth

LOCAL COMPANY SEES EXPONENTIAL GROWTH

CreateMyTee.com surpasses 2010 sales in first four months of 2011

ANN ARBOR, MICH. — After the first four months of 2011, CreateMyTee.com had already broken its sales record for the entire 2010 year. In fact, the custom apparel site has grown more than 350% every year since 2009, making it one of the fastest growing small businesses in the country.

CreateMyTee.com is a website that specializes in custom screen printed apparel. The site allows customers to design their own t-shirts, tank tops, sweats, jerseys and other garments. Customers choose from a variety of brands, garments and colors and upload their own images and fonts or work one-on-one with a designer to create a customized graphic design.

CreateMyTee was officially started by Josh Fales in 2008. Fales got his start selling t-shirts on the campus of Albion College in 2006, when he was just an undergrad in need of “adult beverage money.” As a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, he had access to a large social network and group of friends that helped him sell tees. His perseverance and focus paid off. After graduation, one of his fraternity brothers, Nick Shelton, took over selling tees on campus—a job that eventually turned into CreateMyTee’s Campus Rep positions.

CreateMyTee has received a lot of positive feedback, mainly due to the efficiency of their creation process. The site advertises fast turnarounds of three to five business days, but the crew has produced and shipped t-shirts in as little as two days. The entire crew works together from start to finish to “make shirt happen”—which is one of the company’s slogans that doubles as their office motto. CreateMyTee’s easy process, affordable garments and high quality workmanship has earned them repeat customers, such as the Good Shepherd Episcopal School in Florida, who had this to say about their most recent order:

“I can’t tell you how many compliments we’ve gotten on the adult tech shirts. We’ll definitely be using CreateMyTee for next year’s race and [will be] recommending your services. Thanks again for all your help.”

Fales couldn’t be happier with CreateMyTee’s growth and credits its success to his outstanding crew, adding, “We have worked so hard for so long. It’s hard to believe it’s finally started to happen!”

Fales said that the company’s success is a balancing act, adding, “You have to be open to changes but stay true to your vision.”
Regarding future goals for the company, Fales said that he wants to create a team that everyone wants to be a part of, then make CreateMyTee a household name, adding, “If you think custom t-shirts, you’ll think CreateMyTee.”

***CreateMyTee.com was founded in 2006 by Josh Fales and specializes in custom screen-printed apparel for groups, organizations, teams, clubs, and events. For more information, please visit www.CreateMyTee.com. Make Shirt Happen!

Shirt Happenings: St. Patrick's Day is quickly approaching.

I’m not exactly sure why St. Patrick’s Day exists, but I’m glad it does.  It’s a day of green.  Green pants, green hats, green beer, green face paint, green underwear, and most importantly, green shirts.  If there is one holiday that warrants custom apparel, it has to St. Patrick’s Day.  You probably don’t even have any Green clothes, do you?  I ought to pinch you so hard.  Luckily, we’ve got you covered.  Check out these amazing St. Patrick’s Tees from years past.

Pretty amazing aren’t they?

Why not get some for you and your friends, drinking buddies, loyal patrons, yearly acquaintances, whoever you are going to be spending you St. Patty’s Day with?  You’ll have something to help you cherish your 2011 St. Patrick’s Day (because we both know that there’s a big chance you’re not going to remember it anyway).

Here’s an idea: put a rock on the front of the shirt.  The rock has a sign pointing to it that says, “Tree.”  You can call the shirt, “Sham Rock.”

Nobody wants to walk around with a generic St. Patty’s Day tee you can pick up at your local Walley World. Make an impression on everyone you meet this March and order a shirt that YOU created

Happy Valentee's Day

Today is all about love (and tees). No, this is not about shooting yourself into space in order to avoid your Valentine. But obviously last week’s High 5, titled “Top 5 ways to break up with your significant other on Valentine’s Day,” was all about doing everything to get out of another Valentine’s Day disaster.  Instead of discussing how to ruin your relationship, I’m going to give you my personal advice for attaining unconditional love on Valentine’s Day.

  • First off, never forget. Never forget how you met each other, where you went on your first date, and most importantly, never forget their name.
  • Second, don’t fake your death. In fact, you should stay alive. It’s actually a big part of being in a relationship.  Read that relationship in an advice column once.
  • Third, live somewhere close to the other person. If not together, we suggest somewhere between 8 and 100 miles.
  • Last, give each other gifts. NO JUSTIN BIEBER SHIRTS, they’re completely impersonal.  Try personally designing a shirt customized by you. Let them know how much you know about what they want to see on a shirt.

We understand starting a relationship isn’t easy, neither is sustaining one. Follow our tips and you’ll be married in no time.  Then, according to recent trends, half of you will be divorced in no time.  Actually, none of the suggestions listed above are that great.  Number four’s got some merit.  Custom tees are the internet’s aphrodisiac.

CreateMyTee’s goal is to deliver high quality products in a timely manner that satisfies every customer, just like when you want to satisfy your partner. We also understand purchasing custom products via the internet can be very nerve racking for some; kind of like going on a first date or asking someone to marry you.

That’s why we’ve hired real humans who will guide you through every step of the process so you know exactly how it works. Not only will they be there when you need it most, we will take your design ideas and create a one of a kind masterpiece. It’s like if you wrote down every emotion and feeling you had for your boyfriend or girlfriend and gave it to us; we’d create a Shakespearian love poem that would melt even Sarah Palin’s Alaskan heart.

So next time you want to express all your pent up love, let us know and we’ll create a lyrical masterpiece. Just kidding. Don’t send us your feelings. Only send us your feelings about awesome designs. BUT if you must, please send your feelings to our intern Michael. He’s our in-house relationship guru.

Until next time...

Make Shirt Happen.

Spotlight: Meet the Interns (3 of 3)

Today is day 3 of Spotlighting interns. We've seen the humorous elements of Michael and the sophisticated side of Tyler in part 1 and 2. Last but not least, we offer you the versatile side of Spencer Krauss.

Who is Spencer Krauss?

Spencer helps with marketing when he's in our office but throws balls around when he's not. Spencer is a Professional Management major. His life ambition was torn in two (literally) when he watched a full ride to Stanford get ripped away after blowing his knee out the summer before starting college. Ouch!

Since then, he's settled into a slightly smaller (but still admirable) spotlight as quarterback for the Albion College football team. A new life goal has also immerged: to make the Chicago Bears kick-off team.

What do you hope to get out of your experience at CreateMyTee?:

I hope to learn about working well as a team. I'm also looking forward to gaining experience in Sales and Marketing along with enjoying my time around the great people that work here.

Favorite President:

Abe Lincoln

Club, Pub or Coffee Shop?:

Club over pub and coffee shop.

Extracurriculars?:

Extracurriculars include: being a quarterback, weightlifting(I lift things up and put them down), running, watching South Park, and spending time with my girlfriend.

2nd favorite president?:

Second favorite president=Bill Clinton

Favorite food?:

Little Caesar's Pizza

What drives you?:

God has given me a million opportunities to make other people's days and that is what drives me to get out of bed....most of the time.

If you could have brunch with one person (living or deceased) who would it be and why?:

If I could have brunch with one person, that person would be Rich Gannon, former NFL MVP Quarterback for the Oakland Raiders.

Spotlight: Meet the Interns (2 of 3)

As we mentioned yesterday, CreateMyTee loves fresh faces, particularly those of interns. Yesterday, in part 1, we sent Michael Baker to the Spotlight. Today we shine a light on the second of three interns helping Make Shirt Happen from the CreateMyTee Headquarters. His name is Tyler Yake. Remember the name because we know you wont forget the face. He hails from Iron Mountain in the Upper Peninsula, loves freezing cold temperatures and analyzing utilization rates.

Who is Tyler Yake?

Tyler is a junior at Albion College majoring in Economics and Management. His career goal is to do business consulting or finance... A fair assumption for someone with his background. On the other hand, Tyler definitely gives preference to "the club" over the pub. Not so typical for a business man. Or is it?

What do you hope to get out of your experience at CreateMyTee?:

A working experience and relationship that benefits both my own career aspirations and the company...and an awesome time hanging out with the Crew!

Who is your favorite president of all time?:

George Washington.

What types of extracurriculars are you involved in on/off campus?:

Sigma Nu (Treasurer), Investment Club, Gerstacker Institute for Professional Management.

Favorite color?:

Turquoise. I'm not joking.

Who is your second favorite president of all time?:

Grover Cleveland

Hobbies?:

Sports, exercising, reading, enjoying the outdoors and making Shirt Happen.

Favorite food?:

Tie between pizza and Mexican.

What drives you to get out of bed in the morning?:

The chance to learn new things and be exposed to new and exciting experiences.

If you could have brunch with one person (living or deceased) who would it be and why?:

Warren Buffett, I'd love to learn some his success secrets.

Spotlight: Meet the Interns (1 of 3)

CreateMyTee loves fresh faces. Last week, three new faces joined us at our headquarters in Ann Arbor. Having college interns is probably one of the greatest things to have, ever. First to step into the spotlight is a 21 year old fresh out of the gate. His name is Michael Baker. He's majoring in General Business (one of the vaguest answers you can give, we know). But when it comes to knowing what he likes to eat, he isn't so general.

Who is Michael Baker?

Michael is the newest intern to join the CreateMyTee Crew. His career ambition is ultimately to end up doing something he loves.  Right now, he loves writing and producing his own radio show at Albion College. If he could have brunch with one person (living or deceased) it would be Tom Selleck. Why? So that he could ask him one question, "What's the deal with your mustache?  Like, do you keep it because you like having a mustache, or is it because of Magnum P.I.s success as a prime time television show?  I think people like your mustache.  When they see it they say things like, 'hey, that guy has a mustache,' and, 'isn't that the guy from Three Men and a Baby?' "

What do you hope to get out of your experience at CreateMyTee?:

"Experience, friendships, notches on my professional belt, my feet in doors."

Who is your favorite president of all time?:

"William Henry Harrison.  He was only president for 31 days before he died of pneumonia and pleurisy.  I don't feel as though he gets enough love."

Club, Pub, or Coffee Shop?:

"Pub, unless of course you're talking about an Irish Coffee Shop."

What types of extracurriculars are you involved in on/off campus?:

"I've been doing a radio show for about 2 years at Albion. I'm also a member of Hillel."

Hidden talents?:

"I know I have some, but I can never find them."

Who is your second favorite president of all time?:

"Chester A. Arthur.  The amount of dedication that went into growing those mutton chops is astounding."

Hobbies?:

"Writing, reading, collection records."

Favorite food?:

"A hamburger with pickles, lettuce, and green olives from Casey's Tavern in Ann Arbor.  Don't forget the steak fries."

What drives you to get out of bed in the morning?:

"The Howard Stern show."

Weren't We Cute? - A CreateMyTee Crew Flashback

First off, this isn't embarrassing at all.  Just kidding, it is...

Back in 2005-2006 at Albion College (in Albion, MI), there was a boy who had a dream.  He dreamt of the best custom apparel experience in the history of the world.  He dreamt of boundless fame, beautiful websites, and most of all... beer money.  That boy began questing for his dream, and low and behold it has come true (except for the fame part). That boy formed The CreateMyTee Crew, and so begins the tale of "The Best Custom Apparel Experience in the History of the World!"  That boy's name is Josh Fales, but today we know him as "El Presidente!"

Here is a flashback of Josh and three other CreateMyTee Crewbies (Chad, Nick, and Steve), who each found their start with CreateMyTee.com at good old Albion College.

Shirt Happening #1. FOX 2 Detroit

FOX News out of Detroit, MI will be running a segment on what separates CreateMyTee from its competitors. The piece is called Made in Michigan and will air on a Tuesday in November. The segment will be shot on campus tomorrow at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, MI.

Shirt Happening #2. Cotton Prices

In the world of retail, cotton price increases can be scarring.  While the most recent recession has not helped, other unforeseen factors such as devastating weather in China over the last year have affected the production of cotton worldwide.  The decrease in production over the past few years has caused many farmers to put more of their focus on other crops such as soybeans.  In fact, the price of cotton has increased nearly 80% since September of 2009.  As alarming as this may be, we are confident that this cycle will actually help the prices go back down; As more farmers have switched, and as the economy continues to spark back up, the demand for cotton has once again increased, which will ultimately lead to more farmers refocusing their efforts on the cotton market.

Lukily, there are several hard-core cotton tees that wont let up. Two survivors refusing to acknowledge the cotton depletion are the GILDAN Heavy Cotton and the GILDAN 50/50 Blend t-shirts. In fact, they are our most popular and affordable garments to date.

Shirt Happening #3. Sigma Nu Charity Competition

Charity Competition: Week 1 Update

Today wraps up Week One of CreateMyTee's first ever All Sigma Nu Charity Competition, and so far the response and participation has been unimaginable! With 36 Chapters actively participating, there have already been over 6000 votes, hundreds of free "Shirt Happens" shirts, and some amazing Facebook posts and pictures.

In the past week we have noticed one common theme amongst the Chapters who are bringing in the most votes.  Each of them is competing for a philanthropy that hits very close to home. These Chapters have amassed overwhelming support from their campus communities in the name of a charity they obviously care deeply about.  Men, your devotion is awesome, and we wish you the best of luck throughout the remainder of the Competition!

Below, we highlight 3 of these amazing Chapters and the philanthropies they represent. When you're voting every day throughout October, remember these amazing men and the devotion they've shown for the Charities they are competing for.

Westminster College

The Epsilon Psi Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity at Westminster College, PA is donating to the Mario Lemieux Foundation.  This Foundation raises money for cancer and neonatal research. Westminster keeps it simple. They are a small school with big school hearts and lots of pride. They are passionate about their Charity and will do everything they can to win!

Southeast Missouri State University

The Mu Kappa Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity at Southeast Missouri State represent Southeast Missouri State Suicide Prevention Education.  These men have proven the bonds of brotherhood extend well beyond the walls of their own house and into the hearts of every Sigma Nu, every family, and every community. This loyalty and concern for all is the key to fulfilling their commitment to save lives by educating students and raising funds for Suicide Prevention.

Indiana University

The Beta Eta Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity at Indiana University is donating to LIVESTRONG for testicular cancer research. Earlier this year, one of their brothers, Alex Kadish was unexpectedly diagnosed with Testicular Cancer at the young age of twenty-three. It became clear that LIVESTRONG had to be the charity of choice, inspired by Lance Armstrong, who himself is a survivor of Testicular Cancer.

There are still plenty of days to vote!  All you have to do is visit CreateMyTee.com/SigmaNu every day in October, select your desired Chapter/Charity, and click "VOTE" at the bottom of the page.  REMEMBER, ANYONE CAN VOTE!

GOOD LUCK AND THANKS FOR PARTICIPATING!

"Top Tips"

5 Tips to Maximize your Voting Potential

The ALL Sigma Nu Charity Competition is finally in the voting phase and we couldn't be more excited with the participation we've seen so far! Sigma Nu Chapters are rallying their entire campuses to vote every single day in October. The Chapter with the most votes at the end of the month wins $5,000 for the Charity of their choice, and SIGMApaNUza, a FREE concert/party for their campus.

So far, several Chapters are showing some amazing pride in their Charity and campus. If you visit our facebook page, you'll see just how important the grand prize is.

We can't deny that some Chapters are simply taking it to the next level. But with 25 days left, it's anyone's competition!  Look at is this way: If the members of the Chapter in last place can each get 15 of their friends to vote for them today, they will OVERTAKE the first place chapter.  With that said, take a look below to check out the Top Tips for getting votes. The top 5 chapters currently in the lead are utilizing these techniques every single day to rally their campuses and make SHIRT HAPPEN.

Top Tips:

  1. Suggest the CreateMyTee facebook page to all of your friends.
  2. Get each member of your Chapter to get at least 10 people to vote TOMORROW (if your chapter has 25 members, that's 250 votes in one day.  120 members = 1200 votes!).
